Everything you need to know about attic insulation

A home with poor attic insulation can loose up to 30% of its through the roof. Every time you heat your home a third of the energy you produce is being wasted. In many Irish homes the attic is a place used primarily for storage. However it’s important that you think about it as the first line of defence against loosing heat. Saving energy saves money and it’s also vital for environmental conservation.

How do you insulate an attic?

The main way that you can insulate an attic is by lining it with 300ml Rockwool. Our experts fit this as standard on all jobs we complete. It’s a clean and rapid solution. If you have nooks and crannies in your attic that are difficult to reach a spray foam insulation material is sometimes used. Usually this solution is needed when attics have been converted.

Do I need to change my attic insulation?

Generally insulation in your attic will last a long time. This is definitely dependant on the quality of the material, though. We recommend upgrading your insulation every 10-15 years for optimal results.

Are there grants available to insulate an attic?

The SEAI offers grants of up to €400 for attic insulation. This is a great way to offset the cost of an upgrade. Don’t forget you’ll also be saving money on future energy bills so eventually your new cosy attic will pay for itself!!

Is attic insulation worth it?

Yes. You know how most body heat is lost through your head? Well its the same for your home. Insulating your attic is like putting a winter hat on. It’s also widely regarded as the most cost effective way to have the biggest impact on your energy bills.
