With the cold weather truly set in, the price of fossil fuel on the increase and generous grants available there has never been a better time to invest in your heating system. You could save significant amounts by replacing inefficient boilers with new high-efficient ones, and separate your heating zones to maximise energy saving best practice.

We at House2Home believe that there are two ways to create an energy efficient home: Firstly by Retrofitting measures such as insulation, renewable energies etc. Secondly by changing habits.

This combination ensures that both the property and it’s occupants are utilising resources in an energy efficient manner. An example of this would be the following:

A home owner decides to upgrade their heating system from a 15 year old 65% efficient gas boiler, un-zoned house &  standard radiators with no Thermostatic Regulated Valves. Currently the home owner has a time clock control that activates the heating system for 3 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening. The upgrade would include a 90% efficient boiler which would save 25 cents per euro spent compared with the old boiler. Secondly, modern radiators with thermostatic regulated valves would be installed. The radiators would heat up faster and allow more heat at the front (room-side) as opposed to heating cold walls from the back. TRVs (thermostatic regulated valves) allow the home owner to turn down certain radiators and turn off others thus reducing the amount of energy that the boiler is being asked for.

This is ideal for less used rooms. Zoned Heating Controls would be installed giving control of 2 heating zones of the home along with water heating control. This helps the home owner change their habits of leaving expensive boilers running unnecessarily. We find Climote heating controls an excellent choice for this as you can control your system from outside the home. Finally the hot water cylinder is replaced with a factory insulated stainless steel 4 pipe cylinder. This allows complete separation of water & radiator heating systems for maximum control. The estimated savings over a 5 year period are €2,290. The comfort levels of your home would increase greatly due to the property heating up much faster.
